Hearing Impaired ARP

The Hearing Impairment Additionally Resourced Provision (HIARP) for deaf and hearing impaired children is provided by Newcastle City Council.

The HIARP is staffed with two Qualified Teachers of the Deaf and specialist Learning Support Assistants.

  • Every child with a place in the HIARP is included within mainstream classes with appropriate support from HIARP staff. This support includes facilitating access to the curriculum by providing additional language and vocabulary support alongside visual and practical resources.
  • HIARP staff liaise closely with mainstream teachers.
  • HIARP staff are responsible for the management of hearing technology used by the children in school.
  • Staff provide additional individualised programmes to support the development of areas of need, including communication skills, personal understanding of deafness and vocabulary.
  • Learning needs may be met through one to one and small group sessions in a quiet environment and may include pre- and post-tutoring to support class-based learning.
  • The inclusion of the HIARP is embraced by the whole school community to the benefit of both the HIARP children and those in the mainstream.
