Key Stage 1

THE NEW NATIONAL CURRICULUM

From September 2014, we will be implementing the new National Curriculum at Broadwood Primary School.

We aim to offer all children a broad and balanced curriculum, which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the children in our care. We will also prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

The National Curriculum statutory requirements are mapped through core subjects for each National Curriculum year group. The curriculum highlights the statutory areas that the children must be taught in both core and non-core subjects. The core subjects comprise of English, Mathematics and Science. Each core subject has specific year group and phase group expectations that children must meet.

Below are some links to the Year 1 and 2 English and Maths National Curriulum overviews. We would like to offer our thanks to Gaywood Primary School for allowing us to adopt and adapt their national curriculum documents.

MATHEMATICS

In Maths we use a range of schemes to support the curriculum. We use elements of the Collins and Scholastic schemes to acheive the mathematics objectives, as well as a range of other mathematics resources. We also use a range of I.C.T. programmes such as Education City, Mathsphere and Primary Games to enhance the curriculum we offer. We also try to include maths opportunities in other curriculum areas each week and these are monitored by the Maths Co-ordinator.

ENGLISH

In English lessons we also use schemes to support the curriculum. We again use elements of the Collins scheme to acheive the Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing objectives. In K.S.1 discreet phonics lessons are taught every day. We use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme in K.S.1, but this is also supported by a range of other texts which are available to the children. Children also have a 'Writing for All' session each week where they have an opportunity to write independently, having been inspired by a range of stimulii each week.

We recently adopted a new handwitring scheme called 'Penpals'. which is now implemented right across our school.

SCIENCE

At Broadwood, Science is taught through topics, linked to our Creative Curriculum. In K.S.1. we have half termly topics. The science curriculum is split into Year 1 and Year 2 key skills objectives, which link to each topic. For further details of our science key skills objectives and science topics click on the 'Creative Curriculum Policy' link below and you will be able to access the science scheme of work.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

At Broadwood we make provision for a daily act of collective worship and we teach Religious Education every week to pupils at each key Stage.

NON-CORE SUBJECTS

We also teach a range of non core subjects. These include: Computing, History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Music, P.E (Physical Education), P.S.H.C.E. (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenhsip Education) and M.F.L. - French (Modern Foreign Languages).

At Broadwood many of these subjects are taught through a CREATIVE CURRICULUM, where the subjects of Science, History, Geography, Art, D.T. and Music are all based around a half-termly topic at K.S.1. Years 1 and 2 complete the same topics, but the end of year/phase objectives have to be achieved in each subject.

There is a link below to our Creative Curriculum Policy, which includes detailed schemes of work for each topic and each subject, based on a 2 year cycle.
